Meet the Staff
The one thing that makes a camp stand out more than any other is the quality of the staff. At Camp Piankatank we believe that our staff are the best around.
We select our counselors and program staff based on certain qualifications, but first and foremost, they must be positive Christian role models with a growing relationship of their own.
The other things that we look for in all of our staff are:
- At least 18 years old and one year removed from high school
- Prior experience working with children
- A desire to work with children
- An ability to relate to children (playing, talking, goofing off, etc.)
- A willingness and desire to be outside
- A willingness to learn and work very hard
Being a camp counselor is not easy, and we demand a lot from our staff. It is, however, one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have.
If these qualifications are met, then the applicant is interviewed, references are checked, and background checks done before they are hired. We take the utmost care in selecting the best candidates possible.
In addition to the long application process, all of our staff go through rigorous training. Prior to coming to camp, all the staff are required to watch a number of training videos and take a test to demonstrate their understanding of the material. Once counselors get to camp, they go through two weeks of staff training, where we teach them everything they need to know about being a counselor.
During staff training all of our staff are certified in First Aid and CPR through the American Red Cross. The staff are also trained in at least one specific area that they will be working whether it’s the ropes course, waterfront, or lifeguarding.
Once you meet any one of our college-age counselors, you’ll agree that they are the type of person you want your child to look up to.
